Practical guide

Your first steps into working life

Target realistic roles, improve your portfolio and track applications and graduate programmes against their published conditions.

Choose two roles you can explain an interest in

Write down tasks you want to learn, skills you can demonstrate and gaps to address. Similar roles can have different titles across employers. Use the work description to identify gaps rather than relying only on your degree title or employer reputation.

Track applications consistently

Keep a private tracker with advert link, review date, eligibility, documents, submission date and next action. Tailor the CV to each role by highlighting two relevant projects. A careers page is not evidence of a suitable vacancy today.

Read graduate-programme conditions carefully

Conditions may depend on citizenship, discipline, time since graduation, age or experience. Check the current announcement even if you read about an earlier cycle. If no suitable opportunity is available, use the time to improve a skill and documented project, and seek mentor feedback.

Discuss your needs

Tell us about your current stage and the question you want to work on, so we can discuss suitable support.
