Cambridge AS & A Levels: choose depth with care

Plan subject combinations, staged assessment and university prerequisites without treating all A Level awards as identical.

Distinguish AS from the full A Level

Cambridge International AS Level typically takes one year and A Level typically takes two. AS covers half of the A Level syllabus content. Cambridge offers separate AS assessment, eligible staged routes and routes taking the full A Level papers together. Confirm what your school offers and what final award you intend to complete.

Choose a combination that keeps named routes open

Begin with a few real degree options, then identify compulsory subjects and levels. Avoid choosing only by a broad label such as science, commerce or humanities. A course in one institution may ask for a different combination from a similar course elsewhere. Record the evidence for each route and identify which choice would close an important option.

Check whether a staged route is available

Do not assume that every AS result can be carried forward into A Level. Cambridge places subject-specific conditions on staging, and AS language results cannot be carried forward. Ask the examinations officer about your syllabus, examination series and intended combination. Keep written confirmation before building your timetable or resit plan around carry-forward.

Test your readiness for sustained subject work

Review a sample lesson and task with a teacher. Can you explain the idea, apply it to an unfamiliar problem and keep working when a first attempt fails? Identify missing prerequisite knowledge and make a short catch-up plan. A difficult first week is useful information about preparation, not a reliable verdict on your entire future.

Check the complete school record for Oman

A university’s A Level offer and Oman’s school-certificate equivalency process are separate checks. Provide the precise awarding body, subjects, levels, earlier qualifications and graduation year when asking for confirmation. This page describes Cambridge International qualifications; do not apply its assessment details automatically to another awarding body’s A Levels.

Leave with a one-page subject decision

List the proposed subjects, the reason for each, the programmes they support and one unresolved question. Add weekly study time and teacher support. Review the plan with family and school before the registration deadline. When results arrive, update the record with the actual grades and current admission instructions.
